Abstract:
Lambert Einspieler (1840–1906), a Carinthian priest, politician, and national activist, was among the leading representatives of the Slovenian national movement in Carinthia at the turn of the twentieth century. Although he played an important role in the political, cultural, and ecclesiastical life of Carinthian Slovenes, he has received considerably less scholarly attention than his cousin Andrej Einspieler (1813–1888), one of the most influential Slovenian political leaders in nineteenth-century Carinthia. This article examines Lambert Einspieler’s activities within the broader historical context of the Slovenian national movement in Carinthia. Particular attention is devoted to his efforts to preserve the Slovenian language, strengthen Slovenian education, promote the work of the Mohorjeva družba (St. Hermagoras Society), and represent the interests of Carinthian Slovenes in public and political life. To contextualize his work, the article also discusses the political and national activities of Andrej Einspieler and analyses the wider political and cultural circumstances in which both men operated. The study is based primarily on an analysis of Slovenian newspapers and other published sources from Lambert Einspieler’s lifetime, including Kmetijske in rokodelske novice, Slovenski narod, Dom in svet, Učiteljski tovariš, Ljubljanski zvon, Slovenski glasnik, Slovenski gospodar, and Slovenija. These sources provide valuable insight into contemporary debates on the national question, the position of Carinthian Slovenes, and the formation of Slovenian national consciousness in the second half of the nineteenth century. At the same time, they illuminate the public reception of Lambert Einspieler and his contribution to the political, cultural, and educational development of the Slovenian community in Carinthia. The analysis demonstrates that Lambert Einspieler’s activities extended well beyond his ecclesiastical duties. Through his work in cultural institutions, political representation, educational initiatives, and national organizations, he made a significant contribution to the preservation of Slovenian national identity in Carinthia and deserves to be regarded as one of the important figures of the Slovenian national movement in the late Habsburg period.
