Abstract:
The period during which the western part of the Pannonian Basin was organized as the Principality of Lower Pannonia lasted for almost the entire 9th century. This principality existed as part of East Francia, and its most important political leaders were Ljudevit, Pribina, and Kocel. In the third quarter of the 9th century, St. Constantine (Cyril) and Methodius, missionaries from Thessalonica who were primarily active in Great Moravia, also worked there for a short time. After Cyril’s death, Methodius continued the mission alone. The Salzburg clergy, who had been conducting missionary work in the area north of the Drava for several decades, regarded him as an intruder and sought to remove him. They eventually succeeded, as Methodius was forced to withdraw from Lower Pannonia. He remained active in Great Moravia until his death in 885. Lower Pannonia was completely destroyed by the Hungarians at the end of the 9th century.
