    Introduction
    The course is delivered in Slovenian and is a compulsory course in accordance with the officially approved curriculum of the undergraduate study programme in Business Studies. In the course, the student becomes acquainted with the fundamental terms and concepts of the operation and functioning of financial institutions, their financial statements, and their regulation and supervision. The emphasis is on the importance of a contemporary organisation of a financial institution from both a theoretical and a practical standpoint.
     
    Prerequisites
    Students must understand the basic concepts of economics and management as covered by secondary-school curricula. The course requires the use of basic mathematical techniques. Students must have a sufficient command of Slovenian to communicate with lecturers and fellow students, to follow the lectures and to understand the study materials provided during the course.

    Content (Syllabus outline)
    1. Basic concepts in the field of the operation of financial institutions, the business and financial principles of financial institutions, the role of financial institutions in their environment, financial statements, the operation and functioning of financial institutions, financial analysis
    2. Types of financial institutions and their specific features
    3. Financial intermediation, financial portfolio management, risk measurement and risk management
    4. Special topics in the operation of financial institutions (the development of financial products, supervision and regulation)

    Assessment

    Assessment consists of three elements: 1) a seminar paper (30%); 2) an examination (70%). To pass, at least 50% of all points must be obtained.
